WOW, who would have ever thought The Scarlet Letter would have ended in Dimmesdale’s death. Once he confesses that he is in fact the father of Pearl he fully accepts that he has committed adultery with Hester. But what does this say about Hester you ask? From great evaluation, one can conclude that she is a true hero. At first it may not seem so clear but Hester has given up so much just for her daughter Pearl. For example in the beginning of the book, right when she gets out of jail Hester is thrown on a scaffold and is alienated among her society. At this moment Hester could have easily told the town that Dimmesdale was in fact the father but she did not. Even though Hester may have been feeling many emotions, possibly anger she made a very mature choice in not ratting out her lover. Hester solely took the blame for her actions. This proves that Hester is very mature and selfless, she is willing to give up comfort in her society for the well being of others. Moving on, in no way shape or form is Hester self centered or even narcissistic. For example, society pretty much hates Hester but does she victimize herself? No she does not, Hester Prynne holds her head up high and continues to live her life and take care of Pearl as best she can. This also supports that Hester is a hero because she does not focus on herself, but rather once again focusing on taking care of her daughter Pearl. Another aspect that boggles my mind is, even after Dimmesdale’s death and Pearl is expecting a child, Hester goes back to her hometown and continues to wear the Scarlet Letter! Why in the world would she do this! She finally is able to escape this dreaded town and she returns to wear that letter A which brought her so much pain, struggle and sadness. One reason we can conclude for justification of why Hester would do this is to pay tribute to Dimmesdale and even Pearl. By wearing this she gives a sign that even as time went on the Scarlet letter would never control her life and define her. To continue, we can all agree that Hester is a master at the needle and has proven so in decorating her Scarlet Letter. another reason she can be considered a true hero is even after Pearl may not depend on her Hester still continues to sow items for the poor. Hester could have easily just held a grudge on her town and become a nasty old woman who decides to wear a letter A and become completely isolated but she doesn’t. Even after all the years of hatred and discrimination she still focuses on the ones around her. Not once does she look back and think, that the town must pay her back for what they have done to her. In conclusion, this is why Hester Prynne is in fact a true hero in The Scarlet Letter.
