This book. Oh this book. Such wow. it was a ride of symbols and things that are hard to pick up on. The book went through many thing that I wouldn't even understand or pick up on if i didn't have someone to translate it so its understandable to me. The main character Hester Prynne had a lot of shame. this i understand but then she takes this and she wears it with pride. And her child is really tough and has a strong will. Pearl she was Hester's "shame". She a child and this makes her the outcast of the town and others kids would be ashamed and wouldn't even show their face. Pearl she heads out and when other kids bully her she throws rocks back at them. Dimmesdale he left Hester alone to deal with the towns people making fun of her and criticizing her. Even though he could have taken half of Hester pain and helped her through he didn't step up. Later on he has to deal with the emotional pain of it though. I believe that the emotional and mental stress would be more painful to deal with than Hester taking the physical pain. He lives with this pain throughout the rest of his life knowing he didn't do anything. Another weird part is that he's a man of the church, he suppose to confess and pray for forgiveness. He not only leaves Hester to suffer alone he also deceives the town people and doesn't do what he tells other people to do. Chillingworth is driven by revenge, and this revenge is towards Dimmesdale. Chillingworth acts friendly towards Dimmesdale just to get information out of him only to use this information later on. Dimmesdale does trust Chillingworth to open up to him more than anyone else but this will come back to stab him in the back. When Dimmesdale was going on the scaffold Chillingworth tries to stop him from going up there but why would he do this. Well it was for his self gain. He doesn't want his revenge towards Dimmesdale to be over so quickly. Earlier in the book Chillingworth also was torturing Dimmesdale for the things he had done. Now back to Hester, she decide to go to Europe with Pearl. She lets Dimmesdale on this idea in the forest even thought they were suppose to be talking about other things. Dimmesdale does agree with this idea though and they go through with this. In the end of the book we find out that Hester and Pearl do follow through and go to Europe. They get this money from the Chillingworth. Why would Chillingworth do this well he died and he had money and land so in order to fix his wrongs I believe he gave it to Pearl to live a better life than what they had to go through in the town. Now why Hawthorne write this story in a complicated manner? Well it fits the setting of this book and it gives it a deeper under the level thought for the readers.
