Finally! We are done with this book. I am so relieved that we do not have to read it anymore. All the stress goes away after finishing The Scarlet Letter, but overall even though I did not understand a few parts, the book is a good one. There were a few problems that confused me in the book, especially the vocabulary. There were many difficult words that I didn't know. I mean, I had to have the dictionary right next to me every time I was reading. I don't know how much words I had to search up in the dictionary, I lost count throughout the book. Like I said before, even with all of its problems that made it confusing, I thought the book was pretty good.
I did find a few things interesting in the book. I liked how Nathaniel Hawthrone set up the plot of the story. The plot revolved around a woman. This woman committed adultery with another man in a Puritan society while she was away from her husband. What made it even better was that this woman had a child that came from the adultery situation and was named Pearl. Hester, the woman who committed adultery, was outcast, isolated, and was mocked by everyone in her society and because of Pearl as a result of adultery, she was also outcast. There was another reason that everyone didn't like her, Pearl acted different from everyone else her age. Pearl was acting like a child possessed by the devil. I also liked that Hester stayed in the puritan society even with all the mocking going around her. I mean instead of running of away from her problems, she stayed there and faced it.
The ending of The Scarlet Letter wasn't bad, but it wasn't that good either. Dimmesdale died because he kept the secret of the true identity of Pearl's father. He kept it to himself for years and it was "eating away" at him during all those years. Chillingworth's purpose of life was to torture Hester and Dimmesdale with the secret of the true identity of Pearl's father and adultery. When Dimmesdale died, Chillingworth didn't really had a purpose for life so he dies a little later on. Hester and Pearl leave the puritan society(finally) so Pearl can have a better life. Pearl did get a better life and married into a rich family, then Hester goes back to the puritan society. Why didn't Hester stay with Pearl? I guess that Hester wanted to live out her sin of committing adultery. Some civilians in the society still mocked her, but not many. Pearl received a better life, Dimmesdale and Chillingworth are dead, and Hester is still alive living in the puritan society, where she committed adultery and was mocked for it. Hester is the only who didn't have a good ending.
Overall, I thought this was a pretty good book and was interesting to me, even with all the things I didn't like about it. This book isn't like other books and it is challenging, but it's worth it.
