(week 2)
I noticed that in the Scarlet letter , Hester doesn't want her child, pearl to find out why she has the scarlet letter. I mean yea I admit that Pearl is a child and that she needs more understanding on why her mother has a scarlet letter on her bosom, but why not just tell her now instead of later? he should know that somewhere in between she is the cause of her mother's embarrassment. Well its not ALL her fault! The only role she had in her mother's shame was being born and I don't think that would count as her fault. No one should get blamed for something like that because it was something that they couldn't control! Anyway Pearl should definitely know why her mom has a scarlet letter. Its better now than never because if she knows no then she won't question anyone because she would know. In the book Hester tells Pearl that the reason she wears a scarlet letter is because of the gold threading. Yeah for now that would be an appropriate answer for a child like pearl. But what about when she grows up? She would know that the shameful symbol on her mothers breast is not just because of the gold threading? Pearl then states that she wants an “A” on her breast just like her mother. This is a reason why Hester should tell her that it is a symbol of shame and not a symbol for decorative purposes. y keeping Pearl in the dark Hester will regret her mistake because when Pearl will find out that the adultery symbol “A” means total shame. She would feel really bad for her mother and it will only lead Hester and Pearls relationship which would create a distance between them. So in the end I think that Hester shouldn't have lied to Pearl about the meaning of the scarlet letter
