After finishing reading The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne I asked myself why was pearl the only one who got a happy ending worth mentioning about. She moved away, inherited all of Chillingworth's money after his death, and married into a rich, prestigious family. Why couldn’t hester or anyone else in the book get a happy ending? I was expecting a different turnout than what had actually happened in the book. I thought that not just Pearl but her mother, Hester, would have gotten a happy ending just like her daughter. Hester had to endure all the pain and suffering the scarlet letter had inflicted on her while pearl lived out her life just fine with no worries other than just being an outcast. Hester had committed an affair with Dimmesdale because she was alone while her husband, Chillingworth, was gone for two whole years so assuming he was dead she cheated. Chillingworth also tormented and tortured Hester and Dimmesdale because he had nothing better to do on his own free time, making her life miserable by not being able to get a happy ending with her lover Dimmesdale, the two who i thought were destined to be. Chillingworth was many things both bad and good but one thing he couldn't be or ever achieve was happiness. He became messed up in the head trying to poke all the information out of Dimmesdale to torture him with it but the only thing he got from it was evil. He could have left Hester and Dimmesdale alone and maybe could have gotten his life back together but he had no intention of doing so because something was wrong with him and thus having to mess up Hester and Dimmesdale's happy ending. Dimmesdale was so close to a happy ending with hester and pearl but a lot of things happened and thus making him so close yet so far away from his happy ending. He became sick and crazy because of the torture that was inflicted on him by none other than Chillingworth himself that lead him up to revealing that he was the one who had committed adultery with Hester and of the letter he had on his chest that had killed him upon the dramatic revelation. Pearl was the only one who received a happy ending. Hawthorne could have at least added one more happy ending for Pete’s sake. He totally went in the wrong direction and did things that were unpredictable by the reader only to add more flavor to the text. What I liked was the fact that Hawthorne did give us at least one happy ending, two if you count Hester and Dimmesdale being reunited at death next to each other six feet underground but going back to pearl. She got money, a rich husband, and the most important thing a happy ending. If Hawthorne could have just changed one thing in the text then maybe there could have been a chance for more happy endings.
